John C. Moskop, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus of Internal Medicine at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Following undergraduate study at the University of Notre Dame, he completed a Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin in 1979. From 1979 through 2009, he was a faculty member in the Department of Medical Humanities of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. Dr. Moskop also served as Director of the Bioethics Center, University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina, and as Chair of the Faculty of East Carolina University from 1991-1993. From 2009 through 2023, he was Professor of Internal Medicine and holder of the Wallace and Mona Wu Chair in Biomedical Ethics at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. During his tenure on the Wake Forest faculty, Dr. Moskop chaired the Clinical Ethics Committee at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, taught bioethics to residents and medical students, and was a core faculty member in the Bioethics Graduate Program. He has also held visiting faculty appointments at the University of Calgary, the University of Montana, and the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Dr. Moskop is author of more than one hundred articles and book chapters on ethical issues in emergency medicine, death and dying, the allocation of health care, and other topics in bioethics. His book Ethics and Health Care: An Introduction was published in 2016 by Cambridge University Press. Dr. Moskop is a member and 2020-2022 Chair of the Ethics Committee of the American College of Emergency Physicians. From 2013 through 2018, he served as Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of the Academy for Professionalism in Health Care.
