Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The series contains records related to the Georgetown University Medical Center Division of Health and Humanities' Bioethics and Medical Humanities program. It includes administrative records and course materials dating from 1976-1997. It contains documentation of the formation of the Division of Health and Humanities, including early proposals for a health and humanities program at GU. There is extensive documentation of funding efforts, including grant proposals and correspondence with Cusanuswerk regarding the sponsorship of German university students studying at GU. Other topics include faculty seminars, the interdisciplinary task group, forum on developmental disability, Society for the History of the Health Sciences, and the international health program.

The course materials primarily include classes taught by Reich, but other instructors include Laurence McCullough (especially), James J. McCartney, H. Tristam Engelhardt, Carol L. Buder, Gladys B. White, Michael Enright, Julie Gross Adelson, Marian Osterweis, Steven Lipson, Jai Swyter, Edmund D. Pellegrino, Judith Areen, and William F. May.

Of note are the files on the Bioethics ICS course, which was the first bioethics course required at the Georgetown School of Medicine. The Intensive Bioethics Course (IBC) is also documented, icluding Reich’s notes on lectures delivered at the 1987 and 1988 IBCs and a file on the Extended German Course (1988).

Topically, the courses cover medicine and the humanities, community and family medicine, death and dying, human experimentation, nursing ethics, dental ethics, and resource allocation.

Unpublished Georgetown University administrative records may be consulted only with the permission of the University office which created it. This includes administrative records and courses files found in boxes 1-4.
