0211 Behavior Control: Psychosurgery: Louis Smith (Detroit), 1973

File — Box: BRL Shared 003, Folder: 9

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The series contains subject files that were maintained by Veatch over the course of his professional career, first at the Hastings Institute (then known as the Institute of Society, Ethics, and the Life Sciences) and then at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University. Veatch started compiling the files around 1970 and they include documents dating from 1953 through 2016.

The series is organized according to a classification system devised by Veatch (indexes to the system are available in Box 63, Folder 27). Major categories include abortion, behavior control, confidentialy, death and dying, experimentation, genetics, health care delivery, medical ethics, population, and organ transplantation.

The types of documents found in the series include journal articles, papers, and newspaper clippings annotated by Veatch, lecture notes, drafts of papers authored by Veatch, correspondence, meeting materials, and bibliographies.

Many of the documents were gathered for Hastings Center projects, reports, and programs in the 1970s. Some files document conferences, such as the 1967 Abortion Conference in Washington, DC. The series also contains records related to Veatch’s work with major bioethical commissions, including the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research and the President’s Commission for the Study of Ethical Problems in Medicine and Biomedical and Behavioral Research Records.
