Scope and Contents

The William Wordsworth Letters contain handwritten letters to and from English Romantic author William Wordsworth (1770-1850). Correspondents include Doctor William Howley, Sir William Rowan Hamilton, John Kenyon, Reverend Charles Whitley, Robert Percival Graves, Samuel Carter Hall, S.T. Dawson, Sir Robert Peel, Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie, and Reverend Isaac Green. One letter was sent from Sir William Rowan Hamilton to Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Most of the letters from Woodsworth were sent from his home at Rydal Mount in the Lake District in England. The letters are preserved chronologically in 20 folders.

Biographical Note

William Wordsworth (1770-1850) was the best known of the English Romantic writers. He was born in Cockermouth, Cumbria, England on April 7, 1770. Wordsworth studied at Hawkshead Grammar School and St. John's College in Cambridge. He embarked on a tour of Europe, and he lived for a time in France. In 1793, Wordsworth published his first poems in "An Evening Walk and Descriptive Sketches." In 1798, with his co-author Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Wordsworth published the groundbreaking "Lyrical Ballads." In 1802, he married Mary Hutchinson. Wordsworth wrote an extensive amount of poetry during his lifetime. After his death in 1850, his work "The Prelude" was published posthumously.

William Wordsworth died on April 23, 1850 at his home Rydal Mount in the Lake District of England.
