Scope and Contents

The collection consists of lecture notes, government printed pamphlets, manuscripts, correspondence, research, clippings, copies of transcripts and publications. The collection also includes materials related to Donaldson's terms as President of both Pi Kappa Phi and Delta Phi Epsilon in the mid-1930s. Highlights of the collection included a German barter proposal, materials on German-American economic relations, inter-War economic international plans, and other materials.Subjects covered by this collection include: United States foreign trade, Russia, war reparations, international relations, tariff relations, United States Trade Board, and Allied Forces' wartime debts.

Biographical Note

John Donaldson was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on October 9, 1892. He received his Bachelors in Science from the University of Maryland in 1910 and his doctorate in political science from John Hopkins University in 1914. He served as an economist for the U.S. War Board, the U.S. Shipping Board, and the U.S. Department of State from 1918 to 1922. He served as a professor in political economy, international trade, and commerce at American University, Georgetown University, George Washington University, and Columbian College from 1922-1947. From 1934-35 he served as Chairman of the Office of Special Advisors to the President on Foreign Trade. Donaldson was an active member of both Pi Kappa Phi and Delta Phi Epsilon, where he served as President of each organization on multiple occasions. Donaldson has published numerous articles and books on the subjects of international trade, economics, and commerce. He died on June 2, 1955 in his home in Avon Park, Florida.
