Biographical Note

St. John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801-1890), a prominent English Anglican and later Roman Catholic church official, was born on February 21, 1801 in London, England. He studied at Oxford University. Beginning in 1833, Newman led the Oxford Movement in the Church of England. The movement stressed the authority of the Roman Catholic Church and the significance of the first centuires of Christian history. In 1845, he joined the Roman Catholic Church. In 1879, Newman was elevated to Cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church.

St. John Henry Newman died on August 11, 1890 in Birmingham.

On September 19, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Newman. On October 13, 2019, Pope Francis cannonized Newman.
