Wallace M. Erwin was a noted linguist who taught at Georgetown University for many years. Raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Erwin studied at the Georgia Military Academy. In 1942, he graduated from Princeton University with a bachelor's degree. The year before, he had travelled to Colombia on a grant from Princeton. In 1942, Erwin joined the U.S. Navy, where he taught Japanese to recent university graduates
Erwin earned a Ph.D. from Georgetown University and subsequently taught at Georgetown. He eventually became the chair of the Arabic Department. In 1963, Erwin published the book, "A Short Reference Grammar of Iraqi Arabic."
Wallace M. Erwin died on August 4, 2011.
