Scope and Contents

Hughes' correspondence spans the years 1890-1936. A great portion of this correspondence deals with his service as attorney within the Justice Department. He had been a good friend of J. Edgar Hoover during this period. Also, a great deal of material & correspondence stems fran his association with Georgetown University, both as student and teacher.

Biographical Note

William Joseph Hughes, Sr. (1863-1938), lawyer, was born in Upland, Pennsylvania. He was graduated IL.B. 1891, IL.M. 1892, and (honorary) IL.D. 1931 fran Georgetown University. He was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1891. From 1899-1933, Hughes was an attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice. He retired fran that position in 1933. Hughes lectured on Federal Practice and Procedure at Georgetown University School of Law from 1914 until his death in 1938.
