Scope and Contents

The John M. Daley, SJ Papers include sources and research files for an unpublished history of Woodstock College as well as drafts and notes regarding his dissertation (later book) on the early history of Georgetown College. There is also a folder of ephemera surrounding a 1961 visit he made to Jamshedpur Vice-Province (India) as a part of his Provincial duties.

The John M. Daley, SJ Papers are on deposit at Georgetown University and are the property of the USA East Province of the Society of Jesus. As stewards of the Archives, the Georgetown University Library’s Booth Family Center for Special Collections is responsible for managing access to the material based on policies set forth by the USA East Province. Researchers may view these materials in the Reading Room of the Booth Family Center for Special Collections. General policies for using Special Collections can be found here.

Access to the Archives is governed by the USA East Province and is subject to all Library and Special Collections policies and procedures in addition to the specific guidelines below. These guidelines are a summary of access policies; the Archives may include materials that fall outside the scope of these general guidelines. Guidelines:

1. All Archives materials dated or bearing solely on events occurring before January 1, 1940, shall be open for review unless otherwise restricted, subject to Library policies and procedures.

2. All unpublished Archives materials dated or bearing solely on events occurring on or after January 1, 1940, shall be open for review upon request subject to a decision by the Provincial or someone designated by the Provincial.

3. Researchers may quote from the materials.

4. Researchers may take their own photographs of the material for scholarly and research purposes. Allowing photographs is not an authorization to publish or to deposit the material in another library or archive.

5. Written permission from the USA East Province is required for the publication of substantive portions of any material or publication-quality reproductions of any material.

6. Material not yet processed is not available to researchers; permission will not be granted to access any unprocessed material.

7. Audiovisual, microfilm and other material in the Archives, the original of which is held in another archive, may be consulted and transcribed only. Written permission from the archive holding the original material is required for any duplication, reproduction, or publication of that material.

8. Use the Permission Request Form to request permission (i) to access any restricted processed material or (ii) to publish reproductions or quote substantive portions of the material. Send the completed form by email to the Booth Family Center for Special Collections (speccoll@georgetown.edu).

Researchers are solely responsible for determining the copyright status of the materials being used, establishing who the copyright owner is, locating the copyright owner, and obtaining permission for intended use.

Biographical Note

John M. Daley, SJ (1916-1971) was born in Philadelphia to Anna E. Holland (1888-1968) and Joseph M. Daley (1885-1957), and had three brothers: Joseph F. (1912-1979), Raymond W. (1924-1990), and Robert C. After graduating from St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in 1935, he entered the Society of Jesus at St. Andrew-on-Hudson, where he completed his novitiate and juniorate (1935-1939). He began studying philosophy at Inisfada (New York) in 1940 before transferring to West Baden College (Indiana), where he earned a BA through the affiliated Loyola University Chicago (1941-1942). Daley pursued graduate studies in history at Georgetown University (1942-1944), receiving an MA, and then completed his theological studies at Woodstock College (1946-1949), where he was ordained in 1948.

He undertook his tertianship at Rathfarnham Castle in Ireland (1949-1950), then returned to Georgetown for doctoral work in history. He earned a PhD in 1953 with his dissertation, “Georgetown College: The First Fifty Years,” later published in 1957 as Georgetown University: Origin and Early Years. Daley went on to serve as professor of history and dean of the graduate school at Georgetown (1954-1959); provincial of the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus (1959-1965), and a voting delegate to the 31st General Congregation of the Society (1965-1966). He later served as superior and director of the Loyola-on-the-Potomac retreat house in Faulkner, Maryland (1966-1970). He died in Washington, DC, in 1971.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

A portion of this collection was transferred from the Georgetown University President's Office in 2010 (box 2 folder 21). The remainder was likely transferred from the Leonard Neale House after Daley's death in 1971.
