Manuscript Journal of George S. Smith containing original verse, mathematical information, and an autobiography. The autobiography was written at several different places, notably Panama. The first part of the journal includes original verse and songs by Smith. The second part provides mathematical rules, arithmetic, and geometry. The third part comprises a lengthy autobiograhy of George S. Smith. In 1855, he traveled to Australia, China, and the Philippines. He later joined the U.S. Navy, and his journal documents his travels to Chile and Panama. The journal provides a fascinating perspective on mid-19th century naval life.
