The Max Reinhardt Papers consist of 17 letters and seven photographs from George Bernard Shaw to Max Reinhardt of Reinhardt & Evans, a publishing firm. The material is arranged in 21 folders and contained in 1 box. The correspondence consists of letters from George Bernard Shaw to Reinhardt & Evans concerning the reprint of "Ellen Terry and George Bernard Shaw: A Correspondence," which had originally been published by Constable and Company. Much of the correspondence also involves the search for a publisher for an American edition which was never produced.
The correspondence in this collection was written when Shaw was in his early 90's and shows that he was as sharp, lucid and opinionated as he ever had been. He is involved in all aspects of the forthcoming edition and discusses the layout, illustrations, letters to be included, his royalties entitlements and even the price at which the book would be sold. The photographs in the collection belonged to Shaw and are annotated by him on the verso. They consist of one photo each of himself, Ellen Terry, Mrs. Patrick Campbell, Henry Irving, Barry Sullivan and two photos of Sidney and Beatrice Webb taken by Shaw. The photos were sent by Shaw to Reinhardt to be used in the reprint of the book.

Max Reinhardt, noted British publisher, was born in November, 1915. In 1947 he acquired HFL (Publishers), Ltd., which soon became Reinhardt Books Ltd. Reinhardt acquired Bodley Head, Ltd. in 1956 and later was the chairman of the Bodley Head Group of Publishers (1981 - 87). It is interesting to note that Reinhardt was at the beginning of his career as an independent publisher at the time of the correspondence in this collection.
George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950) was a well known Irish-English playwright, novelist, critic, and socialist agitator and pamphleteer.
