The Andre Gide - Jane Norton Collection contains 12 autograph letters signed from noted French author Andre Gide to Jane Norton. The correspondence touches on various published works requested by Gide or mentioned by him. The letters are dated 1929 to 1930. Biographical note

Andre Gide (1869-1951), a renown French author, was born on November 22, 1869 in Paris, France, the only child of Paul Gide and Juliette Rondeaux (Gide). Early on, Andre Gide studied at the Ecole Alsacienne in Paris. Andre Gide dedicate his life to writing and travel. He published his first book in 1891, entitled "The Notebooks of Andre Walter." Gide soon became affected by the Symbolist movement as evidenced by his "Narcissus" (1891), "Urien's Voyage" (1893), and "The Lovers' Attempt" (1893). Gide often traveled to North Africa, and his trips there influenced his writings. Gide married his cousin Madeleine in 1895. A year later, Gide was elected mayor of the commune of La Roque. In 1897, he produced "Fruits of the Earth." Gide was a prolific writer. Some of his works include "Prometheus Misbound" (1899), "The Immoralist" (1902), "If I Die" (1926), "The Counterfeiters" (1926), "Travels in the Congo" (1927), and "Return from the U.S.S.R." (1936). Gide received a Doctor of Letters from Oxford University in 1947, and the Nobel Prize for Literature in that same year. Andre Gide died on February 19, 1951 in Paris. Jane Norton (1893-1962) was best known as a London bookseller with the company of Birrell and Garnett. In 1929, she became director of that firm. She later published the "Bibliography of Works of Edward Gibbon" in 1940. In 1959, she rose to the rank of general editor of the catalog of the Pepys Library at Magdalene College, Cambridge. In 1918 at Cambridge, Andre Gide met Norton's brother Harry. Norton tried to obtain books for Gide not available in Paris, and this collection documents some of her efforts. [Source: Betz, Dorothy M.
