Consists of two published World War II albums recounting the wartime service of the USS Bataan (CVL 29), 1943-45, and the USS Bairoko (CVE 115), 1945-1946, on which Fr. McHugh served as a chaplain in the Pacific.
Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Collections stored off site require a minimum of three days for retrieval. For use of all manuscripts collections, researchers are advised to contact the Booth Family Center for Special Collections in advance of any visit.
Fr. Lawrence R. McHugh (1907-1988) entered the Society in 1927 and was ordained in 1939. He was commissioned as a Lietenant (j.g.) in the Navy 11 November 1942 and eventually promoted to Lieutenant Commander 1 January 1946.
His assignments included the Chaplain School in Norfolk, Virginia (11-30-1942 to 1-23-1943); the Naval Air Station in Cecile Field, Flordia (2-5 to 10-11-1943); the aircraft carrier USS Bataan in the Central Pacific (10-16-1943 to 6-10-1945); the Naval Hospital, San Diego, California (8-2 to 10-17-1945); and the escort carrier USS Bairoko (10-17-1945 to 5-1-1946). Fr. McHugh reverted to inactive status 12 June 1946 and retired from the Naval Reserve 1 December 1954.
