The James V. Schall, SJ Papers consist predominantly of his published writings as well as unpublished manuscripts and correspondence.

Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Collections stored off site require a minimum of three days for retrieval. For use of all manuscripts collections, researchers are advised to contact the Booth Family Center for Special Collections in advance of any visit.

James V. Schall, SJ (1928-2019) was born in Pocahontas, Iowa, to Lawrence N. (1904-1965) and Grace M. Shiman Schall (1904-1937) alongside siblings John (1929-1995), Norma Jeanne (1931-2021), and Jerome T. (1933-2018). He graduated from Knoxville (Iowa) High School in 1945, was in the US Army 1946-1947, and entered the California Province of the Society of Jesus in 1948 at the Sacred Heart Novitiate (Los Gatos). Schall first attended Santa Clara University before earning an MA in philosophy from Gonzaga University (Spokane) in 1955. Five years later he earned a doctorate in political theory from Georgetown University. In 1964 Schall took yet another degree, an MST, from the University of Santa Clara. Schall then began his career as an instructor in political science at the University of San Francisco in 1955. Next, he was ordained in 1963 and earned a master’s degree in sacred theology from Santa Clara University in 1964. He was then a member of the faculty of the Institute of Social Sciences at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (1964-1977) and a member of the government department at the University of San Francisco (1968-77). From 1977 until his retirement in 2012 he was a professor of political philosophy at Georgetown University. He died in 2019 at the Jesuit residence in Los Gatos, California.
