The Hackert-Nickel Collection contains 242 photographs of the Panama Canal, the Panama Canal Zone, and the Republic of Panama. Most of the photos relate to the construction of the canal and to life in the Canal Zone. Many of these photographs are original, and they provide a valuable visible record of the history of American control of the Canal Zone. The Hackert-Nickel Collection is stored in two archival boxes (1.0 linear feet).
SERIES SYNOPSIS:
Series 1 - Photographs from Envelope. These photos were originally contained in one large folder and two scrapbooks. The 49 items in the large folder have been given their own individual folders and comprise Box 1 Folders 1-49 of this collection. The first 49 photographs date to the early 1900s and document canal construction.
Series 2 - First Scrapbook. The color postcards that now comprise Box 1 Folder 50 through Box 2 Folder 74 were formerly stored in a non-archival scrapbook. Those items have been taken out of that scrapbook and placed into acid-free archival folders. These postcards mostly document life in the Canal Zone.
Series 3 - Second Scrapbook. The second scrapbook has not been discarded, and the photographs contained in Box 2 Folders 75 through 117 remain in their original scrapbook. Each photograph has been numbered accordingly. The scrapbook photos concern mostly construction of the canal.
