This collection contains the writings, general sermons, speeches, and lectures of Father Aloysius J. Hogan. Included in the collection are dedication sermons, convocation speeches, a typed manuscript commentary on a pack of propagandistic seventeenth-century playing cards, classroom notes taken as a student, a 1925 diary from his time as a student in England, and a 1927 diary from a trip to the European Continent. The collection also includes a later memorabilia album from a trip to Europe, including store-bought postcards and photographs, and personal mementos, such as ship menus.
Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Collections stored off site require a minimum of three days for retrieval. For use of all manuscripts collections, researchers are advised to contact the Booth Family Center for Special Collections in advance of any visit.
Researchers are solely responsible for determining the copyright status of the materials being used, establishing who the copyright owner is, locating the copyright owner, and obtaining permission for intended use.
Fr. ALoysius Hoga (1891-1943) entered the Society in 1908. Receiving the usual education in the US, he was ordained in 1923, then obtained an S.T.D. at Gregorian University, Rome, in 1924 and a PhD at Cambridge University in 1927. He taught at Boston College, served as dean of the Jesuit Classical College at Poughkeepsie, and was president of Fordham, 1930-1936. Then until 1941 he was Dean of the Graduate School at Georgetown after which ill health caused his reappointment to less demanding duties. He died in 1943.
