Robert Southey, 1811 - 1832
Scope and Contents
A collection of materials in the hand of English Romantic poet Robert Southey. Contents are:
3 pieces of correspondence, including an 1832 letter addressed to the Welsh politician and philanthropist Joseph Ablett (1773-1848).
5 pieces of paper of various sizes containing handwritten notes as well as fragments of verse and prose, including a portion of Southey's 7-volume work The Doctor (1834-1847).
A single bound manuscript containing several pieces of poetry apparently translated from Spanish, occasionally with the original language on the facing page. One of these works is a translation of the romance of Abenámar, which is documented elsewhere. A pencil inscription on the second front flyleaf indicates a later owner was James Marshall Moorsom (1837-1918), a Liberal party MP for Norfolk. 19th-century brown leather binding with stamped gold title (Translations from the Spanish by Robert Southey in his own Handwriting) and marbled endpapers.

Biographical / Historical
Robert Southey (1774-1843) was an English poet of the Romantic school, part of the Lake Poets group alongside William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and held the title of Poet Laureate from 1813 until his death.
