A. E. Tuthill's copy of "Girton College Songs" by C. L. Maynard, bound music manuscript, 58 pages, England, 1876-1884

An early manuscript songbook for Girton College, founded in 1869. Constance Louisa Maynard, compiler or presenter of the songbook and later founder of Westfield College (a constituent of the University of London), attended Girton 1872-1876. Anne Tuthill, owner and presumed creator of this particular copy, studied law at Cambridge (with which Girton was affiliated) 1876-1879. It appears this copy contains seven additional pages of verse added 1877-1884 by Tuthill, making this copy unique.
The songbook's contents testify to the struggle of women for acceptance in institutions of higher education and contain many examples of feminist defiance and satire of male privilege.
