"Susanah Gridly and her Sining [sic] Book," bound manuscript, vocal lesson songbook, 25 pages, United States (likely New England), circa early 19th century

Small, oblong songbook with heavily worn boards. Two or three hand-drawn staves per page, with the music written on staves that span both left and right pages. Most songs are one-half or one stave in length (15-25 measures); the longest are typically one and one-half staves (approximately 40 measures), though one fills three staves (86 measures).
Most titles are one word, generally geographic locations (e.g., Newdurham, Florida, Pennsylvania, China, etc.), religious holidays (Easter, All Saints), names (Washington, Hamilton), or moral concepts (Amity, Friendship, Exhortation). Among the geographic titles there is a notable (but slight) plurality of New York State place names (Hudson, Newburgh, Genesee).
