Scope and Contents

The collection contains photographs, programs, posters and other materials that document the career of opera singer Alvy Powell. The materials primarily document two aspects of Powell's career: his opera performances, especially the role of Porgy in the Porgy and Bess, and his time performing in the U.S. Army Chorus. The collection includes photographs, notes of thanks, and autographs from a number of U.S. Presidents and their families, including the Ford family, the Reagan family, the Bush family, and the Obama family.

Conditions Governing Access

Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Collections stored off site require a minimum of three days for retrieval.
