Henrietta Handy's Commonplace Book, c. 1828-1867

Scope and Contents

A commonplace or friendship book belonging to Henrietta Wilson Handy, the wife of a doctor living in Princess Anne, Maryland on the Eastern Shore. The contents are largely poems and short pieces of prose, many of which were added in by Handy's friends and family including author and former attorney general William Wirt (1772-1834) and senator and chief justice Salmon P. Chase (1808-1873). A number of prints are also tipped in, most of which depict Shakespeare's heroines. Loose pieces of correspondence are also present.

Bound in red leather with gold stamped decoration on both covers and spine. Spine label reading "Album" also in gold.

A receipt is included indicating that Scheetz purchased the book at the Washington Book Fair in 1991.
