The Bowker Lectures, 1952 - 1981
Scope and Contents
pamphlets containing published copies of the Bowker Lectures on book publishing. The series was established in 1935 as a cooperative effort between the New York Public Library and the R.R. Bowker Company, and after a brief hiatus between 1967 and 1973, was revived as the Richard Rogers Bowker Memorial Lecture, New Series under the auspices of the Bowker Company and the School of Library Science at Columbia University. The collection contains one of the original series and the first 9 of the new. Where possible, lecture dates reflect when the talk was delivered, and do not necessarily match the publication year. The materials included are as follows.
Freeman Lewis, “Paper-Bound Books in America”
Harriet F. Pilpel, “Obscenity and the Constitution”
Barbara A. Ringer, “The Demonology of Copyright”
Frances E. Henne, “The Library World and the Publishing of Children’s Books”
Samuel S. Vaughn, “Medium Rare: A Look of the Book and Its People”
Herbert S Bailey, Jr., “The Traditional Book in the Electronic Age”
Peter Mayer, “The Spirit of the Enterprise”
