Caroline S. Munro, 1804 - 1810
Scope and Contents
A schoolgirl’s notebook of approximately 75 pages from the first decade of the 19th century, quarter bound in brown leather with marbled paper covers in red, blue, and yellow, heavily worn. The contents are split: the first half of the book contains notes on various countries and continents followed by question-and-answer exercises about Great Britain and British politics in a widely-spaced cursive hand. Running the opposite direction, inverted from the back cover are poems by a number of authors including Shakespeare, Petrarch, Burns, and Luís de Camões in smaller tighter script. A note on the front pastedown reads “C. Munro’s Medford 1804” – this is likely Medford, Massachusetts – and the name Caroline S. Munro or initials CSM appear in several places. In addition to 1804, the date April 8th, 1810 also appears, providing a longer window for the book’s composition. Evidence of pages being torn away throughout.
