United Service Club, 1947 - 1969

 File — Box: 62, Folder: 3

Scope and Contents

A ledger from the library of the United Service Club in London, containing both purchases and suggested purchases for “circulating and permanent library books” between 1947 and 1969. When opened from the front, there are 30 pages of proposed book titles with the date, proposer’s name, title, remarks, and whether it was received. In 1951 a space for each book’s author was added, but suggestions dwindle markedly in the mid-60s. Inverted from the back are two pages of purchases for the permanent library between 1947 and 1949. The remainder of the notebook is empty. Suggestions range from the Bible and books on religion and theology to biography and popular literature. Suggestors of note include Sir Claude Auchinleck (1884-1981), Herbert Creedy (1878-1973), and L.D. Spencer (1875-1960). A loose note on club letterhead addressed to the Librarian and dated 1969 is also included. The book itself is bound in blue, black, and brown marbled paper over board (now somewhat damaged) with thick brown twill tape on the spine.

Biographical / Historical

The United Service Club was a London gentleman’s club founded in 1815 for the use of senior officers of the British Army and Royal Navy. In 1816 it moved to its first permanent premises in Albemarle Street, then to Charles Street in 1819, and finally to the purpose-built clubhouse at Pall Mall in 1828 where it remained until the club’s closure in 1978.
