Captain Samuel & William Steele, 1801

 File — Box: 61, Folder: 2

Scope and Contents

A letter from William Steele to his brother Captain Samuel Steele of Augusta, Virginia regarding the potential sale of enslaved people to a mutual acquaintance: “He mentioned that he Expected you along on your way to the Natchez Cuntry this Spring & perhaps might bring on some Negroes for him – I am about trying to tell his Lieking for Negroes – if I can effect it I will send him 4 or 5 fellows to begin the world with.” Dated March 8th 1801(?). The identity of the Steele brothers is not immediately discernible: there were a large number of Steeles resident in Augusta during the 18th and 19th centuries, though one Samuel Steele (1730-1808) had at least 13 children, two of which were William (1760-1811) and Samuel Steele (1760-1845), and these may be the brothers in question. There were two Captain Samuel Steeles (1773-1835 and 1747-1837) resident in Augusta county during the period in question, though neither have a clear connection to any William Steele. ADD: note about materials concerning slavery.
