Gertude Lyons, 1920s

 File — Box: 60, Folder: 52

Scope and Contents

Materials related to Washington DC-based soprano Gertrude Lyons and the production of her program “Musical Memories of Adelina Patti” in the early 1920s. The collection is in two parts: first, two programs from performances of the Patti program, which apparently consisted of Lyons singing the Italian soprano’s most famous songs while dressed in a replica of the gown worn by Patti in a famous portrait by Franz Winterhalter. Second, two undated letters in Lyons’ hand addressed to a “Miss Freel” concerning the booking of future engagements. The letters contain quotations of accolades given to Lyons’ performances and discuss scheduling and pricing. Also included is an annotated typescript of a poem by Thomas Pitt Grace, though the connection to the other materials is not immediately clear.
