Richard Monckton Milnes, Baron Houghton, 19th century
Scope and Contents
Two letters, undated, in the hand of British poet and politician Richard Monckton Milnes, accompanied by a manuscript copy of the poem “A Literary Squabble” by fellow writer James Planché (1796-1880), which provides a humorous commentary on Milnes’ assumption of the title Baron Houghton. The poem is on two leaves of very thin “onion skin” paper now housed in plastic, and written in a very neat cursive hand. It is unclear whether this is Planché’s own hand, though it does not appear to be a draft and the name “J.R. Planche” written at the end does not match his usual signature.

Biographical / Historical
Richard Monckton Milnes (1809-1885) was an English poet and progressive politician. He unsuccessfully courted Florence Nightingale, and finally married Annabella, daughter of the 2nd Baron Crewe, with whom he had three children. He was elevated to the peerage as Baron Houghton in 1863.
