Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, 1958 - 1963

 File — Box: 60, Folder: 42

Scope and Contents

A collection of materials related to the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), a British society dedicated to the preservation of cultural heritage. Four items: two letters, and two tickets, one with an included envelope. The earlier letter, dated November 3rd, 1958 is signed by Society secretary Monica Dance, and provides information about the General Meeting to be held on the 13th of the same month. An envelope and ticket to the meeting accompanies it, signed by a number of participants including Dance herself, historian Rex Wailes (1901-1986), and deputy chairman Hugh FitzRoy, the Earl of Euston (1919-2011). A second letter, dated to November or early December 1963, includes the Lord Mayor’s appeal for St. Paul’s Cathedral and an agenda for the SPAB General Meeting to be held on the 5th of December that year. A ticket to the meeting is also present, signed by attendees including now-chairman Euston, noted town planner Colin Buchanan (1907-2001), Gerard Wellesley, architect and 7th Duke of Wellington (1885-1972), and Henry Strauss, Lord Conesford (1892-1974), all of whom spoke at the event.
