Ethel, H.B., Laurence & Mabel Irving, Early 20th century
Scope and Contents
Four letters written to noted Shakespearean actor Otho Stuart (1863-1930) by three members of the theatrical Irving family, plus Ethel Irving who, though sharing their name and occupation, was of no relation. Only one letter is dated (1911), but it is likely they were all composed during the early years of the 20th century. Contents are largely personal and relate to a performance of Hamlet. Also present is a second letter in the hand of Laurence Irving to an unknown recipient. Curatorial materials compiled by Scheetz himself are also present.

Biographical / Historical
Brothers Harry Broadribb “H.B.” Irving (1870-1919), an actor-manager and Laurence Irving (1871-1914), an actor and dramatist were born in London to the great Victorian actor-manager Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905). Mabel Lucy Hackney Irving (1872-1914), Laurence’s wife, was also an actress, and died alongside her husband in the RMS Empress of Ireland disaster in 1914. Ethel Irving (1869-1963) was a British stage and early film actress.
