Jean Frédéric de la Farge, 1839 - 1846

 File — Box: 60, Folder: 1

Scope and Contents

Correspondence related to French Naval officer Jean Frédéric de la Farge. The materials are not addressed to him, but appear to be related to him or his family: the name Binse, his wife Louise’s maiden name, appears in a letter dated 1846 addressed to “Madame” – presumably Louise herself, and the town of Watertown, NY is mentioned several times – this being closest town to the family mansion in Jefferson County, New York.

Biographical / Historical

Jean Frédéric de la Farge (1790-1858) was a French naval officer and businessman. La Farge arrived in the Americas as a young man as part of a naval expedition aimed at regaining control of the colony of Saint-Domingue. Following the establishment of the nation of Haiti, La Farge fled to the United States, first to Philadelphia, then New Orleans, where he became a successful businessman. He also purchased large tracts in upstate New York, and after 1820, moved to Watertown, NY. La Farge became a prominent developer in Jefferson County, and gave his name to La Fargeville, where he built his family seat. His son John La Farge (1835-1910) was the noted stained glass artist.
