Laline Astell Hohler Barry, Second half of the 20th century

 File — Box: 59, Folder: 29

Scope and Contents

Materials related to Laline Hohler Barry, a member of the noted British De L’Isle family. The first item is a letter in Barry’s hand to an unknown recipient on letterhead from her home at Long Crendon Manor, and includes details of Christmas travels. The letter is undated but is likely to date from after 1927, when the then-Laline Hohler married her second husband Colonel Stanley Barry as it mentions a “Jeanne” – the name of Barry’s daughter by his first wife. Alongside the letter are two pamphlets and one leaflet about Penshurst Place, the site of Barry’s first marriage and seat of the De L’Isle family. Two of these have inscriptions by Mangum and Josephine Weeks dated 1967: Mrs. Weeks (d. 1981) was a government employee and founding member of the Alexandria Architectural Forum. Whether there is a relationship between the letter and the Penhurst materials aside from their general connection to the De L’Isle family is unclear.
