Scope and Contents

A manuscript of an unpublished short story by Welsh writer Rhys Davies, “Shadrach the Dwl”, 20 pages in six short chapters, describing the relationship between a 12-year-old boy and a hermit who lives in the hills outside his Welsh village. The manuscript is accompanied by an envelope addressed to Charles Lahr (1885-1971), the German-born London bookseller, publisher, and anarchist. The envelope is stamped 1929. Also included is a letter in Davies’ hand addressed “Dear Mr Beaumont” and dated 1971 in which Davies expresses his regrets that he has no new content for Beaumont’s publication, Apex I.

Biographical / Historical

Rhys Davies (1901-1978) was a Welsh novelist and short story writer who wrote in the English language. Davies was awarded an OBE in 1968.
