John Joseph Coppinger, 1895 - 1897
Scope and Contents
8 letters written from Civil War officer John Joseph Coppinger to Lucy Ord Mason, daughter of the noted engineer and Army officer Edward Ord, dated between 1895 and 1897. The earliest letter responds to a request on the part of Mrs. Mason for help securing pension money from Congress to pay for the funeral expenses of her mother, Mary M. Ord, who appears to have been a friend of Coppinger’s. The rest of the letters deal with the problems and progress of the pension, with the exception of one, which appears to contain a short poem written by Coppinger: “I remember/the little maiden,/& the red sash/& the sweet child/face over it, perfectly – /I wanted that/first Waltz – & I/got it.”

Biographical / Historical
John Joseph Coppinger (1834-1909) was born in Cork, Ireland and served in a British Yeomanry regiment and Irish Battalion of the Army of Pope Pius IX before emigrating to America in 1861. He served in the United States Army in the Civil War and Spanish American War of 1898.
