Scope and Contents
Approximately 20 letters, postcards, and other correspondence sent to Shakespearean J.C. Maxwell in the 1950s-1970s, mostly from other scholars and editors of Shakespeare. The majority are accompanied by pamphlets or offprints of articles on literary topics.

Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Collections stored off site require a minimum of three days for retrieval. Biographical / Historical
James Coutts Maxwell (1916-1976) was a British literary critic and editor, with a special interest in Shakespeare. He attended Balliol College, Oxford, and subsequently held the role of Professor at King's College, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Reader in English Literature at Oxford University, where he was a Professorial Fellow of Balliol. He was killed in a road accident on 20 March 1976.
