W.H. Lewis, 1967 - 1969
Scope and Contents
12 postcards sent from British historian Warren Hamilton Lewis (elder brother to noted professor and author C.S. Lewis) to Vera Gebbert and her son, Charles; 2 scenic postcards, one blank and the other with a note about the scenery on the front; 2 Christmas cards from Lewis to unknown recipients and featuring Welsh railway scenes; 5 color photographs taken by Lewis and two photographs of Lewis himself, one black and white and one in color. The collection also contains a curatorial file created by Scheetz containing letters and various other ephemera he had collected in his search to identify Gebbert and learn more about the family’s relationship to the Lewises.

Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Collections stored off site require a minimum of three days for retrieval. Biographical / Historical
Warren Hamilton Lewis (June 16, 1895 – April 9, 1973) was a soldier and a historian, though he is best known as the elder brother and sometime secretary, famed British professor and author C.S. Lewis. Following service in the First World War, Lewis retired to Oxford in 1932 with his brother, and together with their friend JRR Tolkien, founded the literary society the Inklings. Lewis published several books on French History and after the death of C.S. Lewis in 1963, edited a series of his letters for publication. He died in 1973 and is buried in his brother’s grave at Holy Trinity Church, Headington, Oxford. Much of Lewis’ personal archive is held by Wheaton College, in Illinois.
