Biographical / Historical

Margherita Arlina Hamm (1867-1907) was a Canadian-born American journalist, one of the earliest female war reporters. Following school she became a reporter for the Boston Herald and by 1890 was a foreign correspondent for several New York newspapers. She traveled throughout Asia, reporting on the Sino-Japanese war in 1894, detailing the attack on the palace at Seoul, and the attempted assassination of Queen Min (Empress Myeongseong) of Korea. Hamm worked as a nurse during the Spanish-American war, after which she moved to Brooklyn NY where she continued to publish in both newspapers and popular magazines, went on a lecture tour about her experiences in east Asia, and was active in the Women’s Suffrage Movement. She wrote several books in the 1890s and early 1900s including Manila and the Philippines (1898), Puerto Rico and the West Indies (1899), Dewey, the Defender (1899), Eminent Actors in Their Homes (1902), and the two-volume Famous Families of New York (1902). She died of pneumonia in 1907.
