Challinor Family, 1882 - 1904
Scope and Contents
Approximately 180 handwritten letters and business documents pertaining to the affairs of the Challinor family of Leek, Staffordshire in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The bulk of the collection pertains to Miss Anne Marie Turner, a Challinor cousin resident in Italy: there are a number of letters from her, as well as material pertaining to her funeral, mourning, and estate, including lengthy correspondence from friends Gertrude Niccoli (nee Birken) and Sophia Chiaracci following her death. Of particular interest is a list of books owned by Miss Turner in both English and Italian. The collection also contains a number of letters and business papers addressed to Captain John Challinor and William Challinor, including one from a genealogist tracing their family back to the medieval period. Also included is information about the letters via the auctioneers from which Scheetz bought the collection for 75 GBP.

Conditions Governing Access
Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Collections stored off site require a minimum of three days for retrieval. Biographical / Historical
The Challinors were one of the principal families in Leek, Staffordshire, England, a market town and major center for silk manufacturing in the West Midlands. The head of the family, Edward Challinor, was a solicitor, while his brother Captain John Challinor was in the King's Own Royal Lancashire Regiment and lived at Tansor Court near Oundle, Northamptonshire. Miss Anne Marie Turner (1818-1887) was a Challinor cousin who emigrated to Italy in 1879 alongside her adoptive daughter Gertrude Josephine Birken – first to Florence where Turner’s sister Sophia Chiaracca lived, and to Pisa where she died in 1887. Edward Challinor was her financial manager and ultimately executor of her will, hence the lengthy correspondence following her death.
