Sir George Armstrong, 1899 - 1932

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 33-35

Scope and Contents

18 letters from the archive of journalist Sir George Armstrong and his wife Alice Fitzroy dated between 1899 and 1913. Writers include Sir Squire Bancroft, Lord Charles Beresford, Hubert von Herkomer, Walter Hunt Long, Alfred Milner, Sir Arthur Wing Pinero, Sir Percy Moreton Scott, and Hermann Vezin. A 1932 postcard addressed to one William Gaskell at 27 Kew Green, Surrey is also included, but it is unclear how it relates to the Armstrong family. The names of several oil paint colors are scribbled on the card in black pencil, suggesting that this may be the minor Welsh watercolorist William John Clare Gaskell (1906-1966), who exhibited at Kew during that time.

Biographical / Historical

Sir George Carlyon Hughes Armstrong (1836–1907) was an English journalist and newspaper proprietor. He served in the East India Company’s Army, where he was wounded during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, and retired as a Captain in 1861. In 1871 he became the editor and manager of The Globe, and despite having no previous journalism experience, he lead the paper to prominence within the political conservative class. By 1875, Armstrong owned the paper and when he retired in 1899 the paper passed to his son George Elliot.
