Alfred Tidey, 19th century
Scope and Contents
A letter from one Charlotte Pope addressed to English miniature painter Alfred Tidey. The contents begin by thanking him “for the two chalk portraits, for the trouble you have taken to make them satisfactory to my friends”, and continue in predicting the artist’s future success. The majority of the text, however, is taken up with religious zeal as Pope provides “a warning which a Christian friend could scarcely avoid uttering lest in the engrossing nature of your studies and in the attainment of earthly fame, you should lose sight of your heavenly destiny; and to fail to obtain that glory and happiness over which time and disappointment have no power and which will endure when earthly fame and success and our most favorite pursuits have become valueless even in our own sight.” Pope’s ends with the exhortation that Tidey read the “two accompanying volumes”, now lost but presumably religious in nature. Folded and sealed with black wax. Undated.
