W.H.D. Rouse, 1918 - 1936

 File — Box: 60

Scope and Contents

Correspondence in the hand of British classicist W.H.D. Rouse. 9 items total: 2 letters of a personal nature on Perse School letterhead addressed to English editor and publisher A.H. Bullen (1857-1920), one dated 30 March 1918. The remaining 7 letters are all addressed to a “Miss Lister” – this is almost certainly the H. Lister who was once a teacher at the Manchester High School for Girls and published on Classical literature. Rouse’s first three letters to Lister (dated February through December 1920) are also written on Perse letterhead and concern the death of Bullen, apparently a mutual friend. Rouse expresses concern about the future of “the press” – presumably the Shakespeare Head Press, established by Bullen in Stratford-upon-Avon 1904 in the tradition of William Morris’ Kelmscott Press. Rouse need not have worried: following Bullen’s death the press was continued by a partnership that included Oxford bookseller and publisher Basil Blackwell, and in fact is still active as an imprint of Wiley-Blackwell. The final four letters, dated between June and July 1936, are on letterhead from Rouse’s residence at Histon Manor and concern matters related to the meaning and translation of ancient Greek poetry.
