Samuel Rogers, First half of the 19th century
Scope and Contents
Three pieces of correspondence, two small notes and one letter, in the hand of British poet Samuel Rogers. All are undated, though the two smaller notes, which contain invitations to dinner for a Mr. Spedding and a Mrs. Graham, are written from St. James Place in London where Rogers moved in 1803. This Mr. Spedding is likely the English author James Spedding (1808-1881). The larger letter is addressed to J.F. Tuffen, Esquire of Park Lane. Like Rogers himself, Tuffen is known to have been a collector of art in the early 19th century, though nothing is known of him personally or professionally. The letter has some damage on the back, and has residue suggesting it was once tipped into a scrapbook or similar.
