Whitelaw Reid, 1873 - 1887
Scope and Contents
Three pieces of correspondence in the hand of American politician and newspaperman Whitelaw Reid. Two letters on New-York Tribune letterhead addressed to a Charles Smith alternately thanking him for his compliments on the paper’s “action in the Claflin case” (November 6, 1873) and responding to an inquiry on “the sermons of Dr. Taylor” (October 8th, 1875). The third letter, dated April 17th, 1887, sends condolences to a Mrs. Sturms.

Biographical / Historical
Whitelaw Reid (1837-1912) was an American politician, diplomat, and newspaper editor. A war correspondent during the Civil War, Reid joined the staff of Horace Greeley’s New-York Tribune in 1868, eventually purchasing it in 1872. A noted Republican, Reid was the Vice Presidential candidate in 1892, and became a diplomat to France and then the United Kingdom under presidents Harrison, Roosevelt, and Taft.
