Quaker Leaflet, 1751

 File — Box: 60

Scope and Contents

A printed leaflet featuring an epistle entitled “To the Quarterly and Monthly Meetings of Friends in Great-Britain, Ireland, and America” printed for the Meeting for Sufferings of the Society of Friends in London, and dated to “the sixth day of the seventh month” 1751. The letter is concerned with the adjustment of the Quaker computation of time to fit the new Christian calendar as decreed by Parliamentary statute as of January 1st, 1752. Following this is a discussion of the ethos behind the Quaker tradition of using numbers to refer to the months of the year and days of the week: the etymological origins of the common names are linked to “Idolatrous Practices” running counter to the exhortation in Exodus that believers “make no mention of the Names of other Gods, neither to let it be heard out of their Mouth.” 4 pages, folio. The paper is heavily creased and torn in places, and should be handled with great care.
