Edward Bouverie Pusey, 1843 - 1879

 File — Box: 60

Scope and Contents

Five pieces of correspondence in the hand of English cleric and academic E.B. Pusey, dated between 1843 and 1879. The letters are as follows: Letter 1 is undated, written on Christ Church Oxford notepaper and addressed to Mr. Fincher. Letter 2 is similarly undated, damaged and missing the end of its final sentence, addressed “My dear Madame,” and apparently providing advice to a mother whose son has recently been admitted to Oxford: “You have heard of the unsettled state of the faith of some teachers in Oxford…in choosing a College one has now, alas, to consider this…On the whole I trust that a young man would still be safe at Christ Church…Else for sound teaching I would recommend University.” Letters 3 and 4, dated November 9th, 1843 and July 19th, 1846 respectively, are addressed to “My dear Coleridge” and “My dear Mr Coleridge” – likely W.H. Coleridge (1789-1849). Letter 5 is written on Christ Church notepaper and dated to the Sunday after Ascension, 1879. It is addressed only “My dear Sir” and in it Pusey asks that a recent letter be destroyed “to avoid all controversy” though its subject is not mentioned. Also included is a printed circular dated 1867 entitled “To the Church-Wardens of the Diocese of Oxford” addressing the dangers of Pusey and his colleague John Henry Newman’s “Romanist” views.
