Robert Daniel Murphy, 1930s and 1940s
Scope and Contents
A small collection of materials related to American diplomat Robert Daniel Murphy. Two notes on card from the Embassy of the United States of America, unsigned and addressed only to “Gentlemen”, one dated January 1938; one letter from “John” addressed to Murphy’s daughter Catherine T. Murphy (d. 1957); two pieces of correspondence in Murphy’s hand addressed to his children, including one letter that mentions dining with “young Douglas Fairbanks” during a wedding in Algiers. Curatorial materials compiled by Scheetz himself show he wrote to Fairbanks inquiring about the letter and received a response signed by the actor, also included with the materials. Scheetz’s letter further indicates that at least some of the Murphy materials were found inside printed books once owned by the statesman and subsequently purchased by Scheetz.
