Six pieces of correspondence in the hand of British academic and literary historian Henry Morley, dated between 1870 and 1885. Biographical / Historical

Henry Morley (1822-1894) was a British academic and one of the earliest professors of English literature in the United Kingdom. Trained as a physician, Morley later became a teacher and in 1848 set up a school in Manchester and began publishing satirical articles in several journals, attracting the attention of Charles Dickens. At Dickens’ invitation, Morley moved to London and from 1865 to 1889 served as Professor of English Literature at University College London. Morley was the editor of two significant book series: Morley’s Universal Library and English Writers.
