Henry Morley, 1870 - 1885
Scope and Contents
Six pieces of correspondence in the hand of British academic and literary historian Henry Morley, dated between 1870 and 1885. The letters are addressed from Morley’s residences in Haverstock, University College London, and Carisbrooke to six different recipients: one unknown, and one each to Mrs. Joseph Cash, C.H. Poole, Prof. W.B. Hodgson, a Mr. Routledge, and a Mr. Dalziel. Contents relate variously to Morley’s work and personal matters. Several of the letters show evidence of having been mounted or glued into a scrapbook, and one is still attached to a piece of paper.

Biographical / Historical
Henry Morley (1822-1894) was a British academic and one of the earliest professors of English literature in the United Kingdom. Trained as a physician, Morley later became a teacher and in 1848 set up a school in Manchester and began publishing satirical articles in several journals, attracting the attention of Charles Dickens. At Dickens’ invitation, Morley moved to London and from 1865 to 1889 served as Professor of English Literature at University College London. Morley was the editor of two significant book series: Morley’s Universal Library and English Writers.
