Scope and Contents

Four letters, one typed and three handwritten by British playwright and novelist Charles Langbridge Morgan and addressed to Mrs. Asta Fleming Whiteside (1894-1979). The contents are brief and personal. Only the typed letter is dated – May 3rd, 1939.

Biographical / Historical

Charles Langbridge Morgan (1894-1958) was a British playwright and novelist. The son of Sir Charles Langbridge Morgan (1855-1940), noted civil engineer, and Mary Polly Watkins (d. 1906/7), Morgan served in the Royal Navy during the First World War and was held as a prisoner of war in Holland. After the war, he published his debut novel, The Gun Room (1919), and in 1922 joined the staff of The Times, where he would later become Principle Dramatic Critic. During his lifetime he published eleven novels, three plays, and a number of essays and poems.
