John Masefield, 1936 - 1945

Scope and Contents

A small collection of materials related to British Poet Laureate John Masefield. Two items pertain to a correspondence with Mildred Temple: one contains two partial handwritten letters addressed to Temple taped together in three pieces; a second item contains a portion of a similar letter glued to a piece of paper alongside a print of a portrait by William Strang with the inscription “For Mildred Temple from John Masefield September 5th 1936.” Also included is a 1945 Christmas card featuring a poem entitled “A Christmas Thought” and a note addressed “Dear Miss Cond” on letterhead from Masefield’s home Burcote Brook near Abingdon.

Biographical / Historical

John Edward Masefield (1878-1967) was an English poet and writer, best known for his works for children including The Box of Delights. He was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1930 until his death in 1967.
