Scope and Contents

Three letters in the hand of American diplomat George Perkins Marsh. One dated 1856 addressed to a Rev. J.W. Holland, and two dated June 1860 to a Dr. Brennen (?). The Holland letter appears to pertain to a lecture invitation, while the Brennen letters refer to some of Marsh’s writings.

Biographical / Historical

George Perkins Marsh (1801-1882) was an American philologist, politician, and diplomat. He served as a representative to the House from Vermont’s 3rd district between 1843 and 1849, and held diplomatic roles in Italy and the Ottoman Empire. His 1864 book Man and Nature was widely influential and has led to Marsh’s characterization as a pioneer in environmentalism and conservation.
