Scope and Contents
Nine pieces of correspondence in the hand of Scottish folklorist, poet, and critic Andrew Lang from the turn of the 20th century. Five letters to unidentified recipients (four addressed “Dear Sir”), one postcard addressed to British historian G.G. Coulton (1858-1947) and postmarked February 11 1906, two letters addressed to journalist and author William Earl Hodgson (d. 1910), and what appears to be the final page of a four-page letter addressed to the Rev. Isaac Taylor (1829-1901), philologist and canon of York. Contents are a mix of personal and academic topics. Also included is a photograph of Lang, somewhat damaged.

Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Biographical / Historical
Andrew Lang (1844-1912) was a Scottish poet and literary critic, best known as a folklorist and collector of folk and fairy tales. He published prolifically across genres from literary criticism and articles on anthropology, mythology, and history to fiction and poetry, but is perhaps most well known for the series of 25 collections of stories for children known as Lang’s Fairy Books. The first volume, The Blue Fairy Book, was published in 1889 and the last, The Strange Story Book, was published posthumously in 1913.
